DeLand Family Wakes Up to Bullet Holes on New Year's Day
A family of four in DeLand started their year off with a frightening surprise on New Year's Day. At least five shots were fired at their house, including one which ricocheted dangerously close to a woman's head while she slept. According to a report by the Volusia Sheriff's Office, the family's residence in Daytona Park Estates off of US-92 was in the line of fire for three residents who'd reportedly been firing their guns off shortly after midnight. One bullet was found underneath a pillow where a woman was sleeping inside, and five bullet holes were found on the outside of the house. One man was arrested and charged in connection to the shooting, which fortunately resulted in no reported injuries. Two other face charges for their roles in the incident, the VSO says. 21-year-old De Leon Springs resident Axel Gomez was arrested and charged with firing a missile into an occupied dwelling. He was booked into the Volusia County Jail on Thursday, January 1st, and was released after posting his $25,000 bond the following day. Two other potential suspects were named in the VSO's report: 25-year-old Amy Gomez and 25-year-old Ken Newbold. Neither one has been arrested as of Tuesday, but both are facing possible charges as the VSO's investigation continues. They were said to have also fired shots, and may be charged with recklessly discharging a firearm in a residential area.
