Flagler Deputy Fired After Battery Arrest in South Daytona
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office has fired a deputy after he was arrested for domestic battery on Sunday. 24-year-old Kaleem Chohan was just shy of one year on the job at the time of his arrest and subsequent firing. Chohan was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail on Sunday, charged with one count of simple battery. His bond was set at $100. As of Monday afternoon, records have Chohan still in custody at the jail. He was arrested in South Daytona, where he's listed as a resident. The South Daytona Police Department was the arresting agency. According to a statement on Chohan's arrest from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, he was a probationary employee at the time of his firing. The agency described the decision by saying they "revoked the appointment of probationary Deputy Kaleem Chohan". He was hired by the FCSO on April 30, 2025. The victim in the incident was a female relative of Chohan's. An order signed by a judge stipulates that, while on pre-trial release, Chohan may have non-violent contact with her. "His failure to de-escalate as he had been trained reflects a serious lapse in judgment that falls far below the standards expected of an employee," said FCSO Chief of Staff Mark Strobridge in a prepared statement. "This kind of behavior will not be tolerated and erodes public confidence. Deputies are expected to exercise sound judgment, self-control, and professionalism on and off duty."
