Hollywood icon Kurt Russell has been named the honorary pace car driver for the Daytona 500 next month, per an announcement from Daytona International Speedway. The famed actor will drive the pace car as the field of drivers warm up prior to the green flag on the 68th running of the Great American Race. "It's incredibly exciting to be named the honorary pace car driver for this year's Daytona 500," Russell said in a statement. "I can't wait to get back behind the wheel, it's been a long time since I've been in a race car." Among the highlights of Russell's film career are some of the most iconic science fiction and drama titles of the 20th century: Escape from New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. He's also known for his modern roles in the Fast & Furious franchise and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Russell's appearance at the Daytona 500 coincides with his latest major role: the second season of Apple TV's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. In the show, Russell plays an Army colonel investigating the aftermath of attacks by monsters like Godzilla and King Kong. He shares the role with his son, actor Wyatt Russell.
