Trevon Miller Sentenced to Life for Stabbing of Volusia Correctional Officer

Trevon Miller was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for the stabbing of a Volusia County correctional officer in 2021. The Live Oak, Florida resident was already serving a 30-year sentence when he was said to have attacked Officer Paul Lane at Daytona Beach's Tomoka Correctional Institution. Last month, at the conclusion of a three-day trial, Miller was convicted of attempted second-degree murder on a law enforcement officer and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. His prior conviction from 2016 was for armed burglary, armed kidnapping, and sexual battery by force or deadly weapon in Polk County. In September 2021 Miller was accused of hiding behind a laundry room door at the Tomoka Correctional Institution, armed with an improvised knife. When Lane walked into the room, Miller was said to have ambushed him, stabbing him multiple times in the face, back, and neck. Fortunately, Lane has recovered from his injuries. "Correctional officers deal with the worst of the worst on a daily basis," said State Attorney R.J. Larizza in a prepared statement. "We must respect, protect, and defend them always. This sentence reveals that we seek and obtain maximum mandatory sentences for those harming our correctional officers."
