Active Shooter Detained at Port Orange Police Department
UPDATE: The shooter has been identified as 71-year-old Linda Jean Croteau. Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino said she entered the lobby with a handgun, spoke to civilian staff, and then fired shots. No officers or other POPD employees were injured in the shooting. Police closed in on her position and an officer-involved shooting commenced with three officers involved. Croteau was reportedly shot by officers after exiting the lobby, still holding the handgun. She was hospitalized in critical condition. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating, as is customary with officer-involved shootings. The lobby will remain closed until Tuesday, September 8. An active shooter was reportedly detained at the Port Orange Police Department office on Thursday morning, the agency confirmed. The incident occurred at around 8:30 a.m. according to the POPD. No officers or employees were injured. As of the POPD's first public statement on the shooting, the investigation was still ongoing and little information could be confirmed. The agency stated their lobby would remain closed "for the remainder of the investigation". One social media video appears to show police officers surrounding a suspect in the police station parking lot with guns drawn. Several patrol vehicles arrive on-scene during the video, and the person filming appears to witness the shooter being shot by police. Officers are seen in the video rushing in toward an apparent suspect lying on the ground. With several guns still trained on the figure, they appear to be placed in handcuffs and detained. The identity and condition of the shooter have not been clarified by the Port Orange Police Department as of this initial report. According to one report from the Daytona Beach News-Journal, witnesses saw a woman leave the police station with a firearm. She was said to have been taken in an ambulance. As of Thursday morning, several details of the shooting still remain unclear. This and/or subsequent reports will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
