Seville Man Arrested After Armed Standoff

A Seville resident was arrested Sunday after a prolonged, armed standoff with law enforcement at his residence. 28-year-old Austin Mowery was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. The incident began with a wellness check call to 2170 Lake Juanita Road in Seville. Deputies with the Volusia Sheriff's Office were reportedly told of concerns with Mowery's mental health and about the level of care provided to animals which lived at the property. According to the VSO, the deputy's first contact with Mowery occurred around 8:09 p.m. He was said to have been "rambling incoherently", before going back inside. Soon thereafter, Mowery is accused of pointing a shotgun at the deputy from one of the windows in the home. The deputy fired several shots at Mowery and ran behind a structure near the house. Neither individual was injured, per the VSO. An armed standoff began that lasted well into the early hours of Monday morning. Over six hours into the incident, the VSO says Mowery surrendered at 2:32 a.m. He was taken into custody and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he remains as of Wednesday without bond. Mowery has no other arrests on record in Volusia County.
