Volusia County Holding Hazardous Waste Collection Events in October
The Volusia County government is holding two hazardous waste collection events in October, per an announcement on Monday. The events will be held on Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10 at two locations. On Friday, the collection will be at Ormond Beach Public Works (501 N. Orchard St, Ormond Beach). On Saturday it will be at New Smyrna Beach Public Works (124 Industrial Park Ave, New Smyrna Beach). Both events will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Those unable to attend either day of collection still have an opportunity to dispose of their hazardous waste. The Tomoka Landfill (1990 Tomoka Farms Road, Port Orange) and the West Volusia Transfer Station (3151 E. New York Ave, DeLand) both accept free hazardous waste collection year-round. These facilities also conduct paint exchange and electronic waste recycling. During the collections, residents can bring household hazardous waste to be disposed of free of charge. This applies to items which cannot or should not be thrown away with ordinary trash. One potentially popular item, fluorescent lamps, are being limited to 10 per person. Items which are encouraged to be brought include "old paint, solvents, automobile and household batteries, pool chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, gasoline, and other household chemicals". Items such as these can cause harm to local ecosystems such as waterways and soil. They can also cause public health issues if residents come into contact with these substances. Those who attend the collection events will be asked to show proof of Volusia County residency, the county says. Traffic will be directed on-site, and attendees will remain in their vehicles while the materials are unloaded. More information on hazardous waste collection in Volusia County can be found by contacting the Volusia County Solid Waste Division at (386) 947-2952.
