2 Rescued After Sailboat Crashes in New Smyrna Beach

Two people were rescued after a sailboat crashed in New Smyrna Beach on Monday. The occupants were a couple who reportedly said they were sailing their boat home from St. Augustine. The U.S. Coast Guard has reportedly responded to investigate the incident, which left the sailboat partially stuck on the beach. A 911 call was placed at about 10:58 p.m. Monday evening, according to a statement on the incident by the Volusia Sheriff's Office. The wife said that their boat had been significantly damaged, but was fortunately not taking on water. The mast was reportedly among the components damaged. When emergency responders arrived, the boat was found beached about 300 yards south of Jetty Park in New Smyrna Beach. Just beforehand it was said to have struck the New Smyrna Beach Jetty. At the time of impact, Volusia County was experiencing heavy rain, strong winds, and rough surf. Fortunately, both occupants told responders that they were not injured in their hectic crash. VSO deputies took them to the District 3 South office so they could rest and make lodging accommodations for the duration of the storm.
